Assistant Tax Attorney General (ATAG) of United States is nominated by the President of USA for fixed tenure with the senate’s confirmation. At present, Eileen J O’Connor is the Assistant Attorney General for the Tax Division. ATAG has a very critical part in developing tax laws and implementation of the tax laws i.e. tax law enforcement to maintain confidence in the integrity of the tax system.

Tax Division examines to find out liability for tax shelter promoter penalties and recognize tax shelter purchasers. It also summons litigations, enabling the government to identify people who conceal their income and assets from the IRS. It also handles the civil and criminal matters that turn out to be under the internal revenue laws i.e. it checks the promotion of tax scams and obtain court orders directing the suspects to provide the identities of their clients.

Assistant Tax Attorney General has to defend United States in oral arguments before the US Supreme Court and the US Court of Appeals for the fifth circuit. ATAG works in association with the Internal Revenue Service to develop tax administration policies, handle trials, appeals, prosecutions and litigations in federal and state courts.

Tax Division participates in the President’s Corporate Fraud Tax Force to promote corporate integrity and pursue investigations and prosecutions of corporate executives. It also combats schemes that deceive the IRS through abuse of bankruptcy system and make use of both civil and criminal tools to put tax fraud sponsors out of business.

Ms O’Connor completed her undergraduate degree from Columbus State University and law Degree from Catholic University. She is an active member of the District of Columbia, Federal Bar Association, Bar of the US Supreme Court, and the Tax Court Bar.
